I vividly recall the first time I delved into this series during my younger years, and the concluding moments left me quite disenchanted. My admiration for the character of Hung Yu made the ending particularly vexing, as the customary triumph of good over evil did not come to fruition. The discontent lingered within me for weeks. It wasn't until recently, as I revisited the series with a more mature perspective and delved into the historical backdrop of the conflict between the Chu and Han Kingdoms,...
that certain aspects of the storyline began to irk me. The loose connection to the Chu-Han war and its lead-up felt like a missed opportunity for a truly epic narrative had the series hewed closer to actual events. Despite a commendable cast, the initial episodes seemed to meander with the introduction of the character Lau Bong, whose slow-paced delivery felt rather uninspiring. The brief appearance of Barbara Yung left me pondering if her role was meant to be more substantial before her untimely exit, coinciding with the period in which she departed. Idy Chan's portrayal of Consort Yu commenced around the middle episodes, ushering in a banal love triangle that failed to captivate. It wasn't until later installments that the drama truly began to grip me, albeit after a considerable wait. Ultimately, it was the evocative soundtrack and exquisite costumes that shone amidst the series' shortcomings and captured my admiration.
