The adaptation of a beloved Jin Yong novel, this TV series truly stands out as the best in my opinion. Seamlessly continuing from its predecessor, it boasts a familiar supporting cast that enhances the overall viewing experience. The pacing of the episodes is just right, delivering a continuous stream of action that remains faithful to the source material. The authenticity is further highlighted by the dialogue lifted straight from the novel's pages, immersing viewers in the narrative.
Louis Koo's portrayal of Yeung Gor is strikingly...nuanced, capturing the character's evolution from cunning and playful to a darker persona after a significant event. This depth adds a layer of authenticity often missing in other adaptations. Carmen Lee shines as Siu Long Niu, embodying her character's beauty and aloofness with aplomb. The chemistry between Koo and Lee is palpable, adding another dimension to the series.
The supporting cast, particularly Gigi Fu as Kwok Fu and the actresses portraying Lok Mo Seung and Cheung Ying, deliver memorable performances that enrich the story. Cheung Ying's character stands out, complemented by a visually striking costume that mirrors her personality. While the costumes may not be groundbreaking, they serve their purpose in a period drama setting.
However, the music falls short of expectations, lacking the impact of previous versions. Despite this flaw, the series as a whole remains a well-crafted production. In a landscape cluttered with visually stunning but narratively lacking adaptations, this series shines by staying true to the essence of the original story. Simple yet effective, it captivates audiences and remains a standout among its peers.
Having watched multiple adaptations of this tale, including the Andy Lau version, I can confidently say that this rendition holds a special place in my heart. Its adherence to the source material and the compelling performances make it a must-watch for fans of the novel and newcomers alike.
